Portrait of a Young Girl by Widhopff
Item Description
Oil painting on canvas by the Ukranian born artist David Osipovitch Widhopff (1867-1933).
A quiet portrait of a thoughtful looking young girl, with her head slightly inclined and her gaze directed a little to one side.
She has a somewhat Moorish look, with her strong, wiry dark hair and dusky skin colour.
Painted in an interesting style, with just a minimum of paint plus a few highlights on her clothes and on the simple background, and a richer, more detailed look to her face and hair.
Widhopff was born in Odessa where he commenced his artistic education before moving to Munich where he studied under Max Herterich at the Munich Royal Academy. In 1887 he made a final move to Paris to complete his studies at the Académie Julian. He lived in Paris until his death in 1933.
Signed top right and showing a faint date beneath the signature which appears to read 1892.
