Orientalist Bust of an African Woman*
Item Description
Fine Orientalist bust by Van Hasselt of an African woman dressed in an ornately coloured robe and complementing headdress. Also wearing a coloured necklace, she’s a striking looking young woman with her lovely ebony skin and dark red lips.
She is looking slightly to one side and, with her eyes lowered a little, she has a modest yet proud appearance.
These young black women made superb models for the sculptors of the period and this is another that really capture the right atmosphere.
Numbered and showing the Van Hasselt monogrammed mark on the back. A metal Van Hasselt plaque is attached to the underside.
Dating from circa 1900 and approximately 46 cm high.
