Mystical Creatures Box*
Item Description
This is a box that’s full of character and a great example of the fascination dragons, sea serpents and other mythical creatures held for some of the oldest Arts & Crafts artisans – especially those who worked in the west country fashioning objects from copper.
The box, which stands on four raised feet, is unmarked but certainly Cornish and from the late 1800’s.
Adorned with winged dragons, those on the front and back with forked tails, it is a truly delightful piece of hand-made craftsmanship.
The ornate twisted handle lifts a wavy-edged hinged lid revealing a good size interior.
One of the bolts securing the handle to the lid has been replaced at some stage in the past, and the catch at the front of the lid is incomplete, but these are minor defects that in our opinion do little to reduce the worth of this fine old piece.
Measuring approximately 30 cm long and 16.5 wide, with an overall height of around 21 cm.
