La Villanella*
Item Description
These little plaster busts turn up in France from time to time, variously titled, as this one, “La Villanella” (The Village Girl) or “Au Village” (From the Village). A lot of them have suffered over the years and many appear to have been repainted – often by children judging by the look of them. This one is a nice example and in clean, original condition.
Not exactly high art but nonetheless a charming little piece of French Art Nouveau depicting a working-class country girl. She looks a little serious in her head scarf and simple clothes but has a lovely young face.
Originally from Citti Freres, Paris, standing around 35 cm high and numbered on the back.
