Arts & Crafts Owl Brooch Pendant*
Item Description
Arts & Crafts silver brooch pendant with an elongated heart-shaped outline featuring a wonderfully cute stylised enamelled owl perching on a leafy branch.
The quizzical looking bird is seen almost head-on, and is decorated in varying shades of foil-backed blue, violet and pink enamel, with its large black and white eyes turned to one side.
Almost certainly enamelled on to copper, the convex plaque contained within a beaded border and with a mottled blue cabochon set in the drop below.
Unsigned but we are almost sure it’s by Mrs. Ernestine Mills (1871-1959) as it bears more than a passing resemblance to some of her work – e.g. see photo on p. 81 of Jewelry & Metalwork in the Arts & Crafts Tradition by Elyse Zorn Karlin.
For wearing as a pendant, the chain is simply passed behind the brooch pin and can easily be attached or removed according to preference.
A little over 5 cm in length, including the drop. The necklace chain is 55 cm long.
