Gold Pendant/Locket by Mrs. Newman
Item Description
Arts & Crafts jewellery designed and crafted by Charlotte Newman (1840-1927) is now keenly sought after and is becoming increasingly hard to find, so we were deligted to acquire this splendid example of her work.
One of the very first lady goldsmiths, she was at first employed by the highly regarded London jeweller John Brogden where she first made her mark. After his death she started her own business in 1884.
Highly skilled at every aspect, her pieces are always eye-catching and this pendant/locket is no exception.
Crafted in high carat gold, it is openwork in design and features little green enamelled stems and stylised leaves interspersed with pearls and turquoise cabochons, all surrounding the central upright oval locket which opens from the front.
The original decorative bale with its two turquoise stones is still intact and the overall look is beautifully balanced.
Simply signed Mrs. N on the back, in the usual way.
This true pioneer lady jeweller paved the way for many other craftswomen who followed her lead.
Just over 6 cms in length, including the bale, and on an ornate 9 ct. gold necklace chain measuring 45 cms.
