Gold Portrait Locket by Archibald Knox
Item Description
Impressive Art Nouveau locket crafted in 15 ct. gold, designed by Archibald Knox and dating from the very early 1900’s.
The circular locket sits within a subtly contoured and typically Knox designed frame with whiplash and knotted features, finishing with a little pearl drop at the foot.
It opens by removing the back plate which then clips back into place.
This particular locket houses an exquisite watercolour on ivory portrait in miniature of an auburn haired young girl wearing a high-necked white smock, painted by Hannah Elizabeth Smith (1855-1919), a recognised and highly accomplished artist who specialised in miniatures and exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Miniature Society and the Royal Society of Artists.
Her paintings are very collectable in their own right and her signature can be seen at lower right together with the year 1903.
Length, including the bale and the pearl drop, is 7 cms. with the overall width just a fraction below 4.5 cms.
On a 9 ct. gold necklace chain with a length of 53 cms.
