A Snowy Day by Victor Guerrier*
Item Description
Striking three-quarter length outdoor portrait of an elegant and very fashionable young Parisian woman on a cold and snowy day, by the French artist Victor Guerrier (born Lyon 1893).
She’s strolling in the Place de l’Opéra, wearing a fur trimmed cape and keeping her hands warm in a large fur muff. Her outfit is topped with a rather splendid feathered hat.
Looking directly at the viewer, the subject appears to have paused just long enough for the artist to capture her image.
Painted in gouache on paper and mounted on canvas, the painting was unframed when we acquired it, and we have since had it sympatheticaly framed and glazed.
Victor Guerrier specialised in depicting French high society and subjects from the Belle Epoque era during the period between the two World Wars and many of his works have been sold at auction. His lively handling of paint and gestural brushmarks give his paintings real energy and vitality.
Signed V. Guerrier at lower right and measuring approximately 77 X 61 cm overall with the visible image 69 X 52.5 cm.
